Thank you to those agreeing to serve on the Canvass Committee regarding the revision of ANSI Standard B165.1 Power-Driven Brushing Tools – Safety Requirements for the Design, Care and Use. The purpose and intent of the standard is to provide manufacturers and users with guidelines for the safe design, manufacture and use of power driven brushes. It outlines procedures and criteria to foster cost-effective, efficient and safe products.
The genesis for this standard came from the Safety and Standards Committee of the American brush Manufacturers Association (ABMA) in 1971. Extensive canvassing of manufacturers and end users was done over a number of years to compile all of the available information on safe and proper brush design, manufacture and use. In conjunction with ABMA, the Society of Manufacturing Engineers devoted large amounts of time and effort to this initial work. The standard was officially published in 1979, and has been reviewed, updated and reaffirmed periodically since its initial publication. The ABMA Safety and Standards Committee has again researched interested parties and proposed changes to the standard to keep it current and relevant.
Ballot Packages have been mailed to those in the Canvass Committee. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) plays a unique and crucial in the standard’s development and maintenance process. A complete ballot package is attached, including:
See Section A for a more detailed description of ANSI.
A complete revision draft is included in Section B. Proposed changes to the ABMA Safety Slip (Illustration 2) are included at the end of this section. For your convenience, a summary of revisions precedes the revision draft.
A ballot for your response is included in Section C. Please return it to me with your response by November 9, 2025. Please note that any objection must be supported by written reasons or they will not be considered. Proposals to correct any objections are also helpful and appreciated. During the 60 day review period, we will share any received change proposals and may submit revised ballots for your consideration.
